Mani Subra, AIA, founder, president and principal of Scottsdale Airpark based Design One, Inc., Subra’s dedication to his work, his team, his principles and the environment are evidenced in his personal style, as well as the style of the buildings he designs.
A native of the Madras area of India, Subra is eldest son of a small business owner. He grew up “always sketching things.” After getting a degree in architecture in India, he started out working for the government and teaching. But he dreamed of coming to America, drawn by the many opportunities and freedoms he saw here.
In 1970, Mani Subra and his wife came to the U.S. so that he could study at School of Architecture at Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin East in Spring Green, Wisconsin. After Taliesin, he spent 12 years as an architect in Canada; first in Toronto, where he worked with renowned Canadian architect Ron Tom, then in Calgary with ATCO Corporation. But he still wanted to be in America. So, in 1982, he decided to come to Scottsdale for the climate, which was more like home, and to be closer to Taliesin which he had visited in 1970 as a student. After working with another architect for a few years, he started Design One, Inc. in 1986.
